As a young man growing up in the United States, for as long as I can remember, I have aspired to be or desired to acquire certain things in my life to make me feel successful. When I was a child it came in the form of the most expensive toys, best bike, and the best snacks at lunch in school. As I got older, it was about being the best dressed, having the most expensive sneaks, being on a sports team or dating the hottest girls. As a young adult, it became about having a car and money. At every stage, my peers and I would encourage each other and sometimes even work together to achieve these things, because we believed if we did not attain these things we were not cool or successful. So, as an adult, we kept up with the same pattern. As adults, we now feel like we must achieve the job, the nice car, and the big house with the white picket fence, nice yard, and the dog. We make this our life’s duty almost as if we are not living life’s purpose if we do not acquire these things. Without even knowing it, we have been conditioned by television, radio, and other platforms man uses almost from conception, to crave the “American Dream”. But what does God really intend for His children? Are we truly happy? Or is there more?
We often get so engulfed with life as we have been conditioned to live it that it is very difficult to look at our lives a little deeper. All of the distractions which the enemy places in front of us make it really difficult to see what the Most High may have for us. We often get so distracted that we begin to make the things of man our god, and we begin to live only for them and not for the one true God. Like the saying, “You are what you eat,” we ingest so much of the things of man that we think, do, and talk the way of man and not of God. We even begin to worship the lifestyle. This occurs not only to non-believers or regular church patrons but even to the laborers. Although we may be pleased with life, we are in error.
Leviticus 26 clearly states that the children of the Most High God should not have any gods before the Most High but should set them aside and serve Him only. Serving Him means to think, act, talk, and treat life the same way our King, Jesus the Christ, would. So, we must take in the word of God as much as possible so that we have it deep down in us.
Jeremiah 2:13 describes God as the living water and that we had forsaken Him by not having the capacity to contain Him. The Word also teaches us in John, that in the beginning was the Word, and the Word was God. So, for us as believers, we should make a conscious effort to submerge into His Word.
Because of outside influence, and because we are of flesh, this can be very difficult for us. However, the Most High in His infinite knowledge knew that about us. So, He sent His only begotten Son to come down here with us on earth and be the example for us.
In fact, in Matthew 4, at one of Jesus’ most trying times, He was fasting in the wilderness when the enemy approached him. As the enemy presented Jesus with all the things of the world by which He could possibly be tempted, he was able to combat the temptations by using the Word as a defense because He knew the Word so well that it poured out of Him like water.
Jesus the Christ was our example, but also after He left us to go back to the right hand of the Father, He sent the helper, the Holy Spirit to aid us in rightly understanding and living out God’s Word. The Word of God describes the Holy Spirit as a fire baptism, and that it brings what we have inside of us back to remembrance. That’s how we fight the enemy and sickness. That’s how we live a life more abundantly! We have to drown ourselves in His Word and be burning with the fire of the Holy Spirit!
It is nice to have the big house, the car and the dog, but we cannot survive on just those things! I encourage you all, today, instead of listening and following the words of man, begin to drown yourself in the living water. Don’t succumb to your burning desires of the flesh, but instead keep yourselves burning in the fire of the Holy Spirit!
